YangYeong(YeongJu Yang) / Founder & Director of Transaction-ArtLab
Artist Yang Young-joo raises questions about where our desires originate in the midst of a complex modern society. While human beings are social animals who must pursue socially coded desires in order to survive, she asks whether culture, like ecosystems that maintain their health through the coexistence of diverse life forms, might also become healthier when desires are de-coded and allowed to coexist. To explore this, she has collaborated with virologists and immunologists at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology.
Her workshop, grounded in this line of inquiry, invites participants to reflect on their own desires that mutate and shift within contemporary society. Through a simple meditation and the use of stamp-based painting techniques, participants create their own ¡°image mutations¡± and contribute to building a collective database of desires. This process becomes a form of art therapy, offering a chance to both contemplate what one¡¯s inner self seeks and to experience simultaneously the empowerment and exhaustion that desire can bring.
The workshop is presented in conjunction with the artist¡¯s talk. Participants generate image data and instantly receive their own digitally transformed artwork. Ultimately, this workshop provides a space to share thoughts on the limitations and possibilities of image data in both analog and AI-driven artistic practices.
