YangYeong(YeongJu Yang) / Founder & Director of Transaction-ArtLab
Artist Yang Young-Ju raises questions about where our desires originate in the midst of complex modern society. Human beings, as social animals, must pursue socially coded desires for survival. Yet, from a scientific perspective, just as ecosystems maintain health through the coexistence of diverse life forms, culture too may become healthier when desires are de-coded and allowed to coexist. Based on this question, the artist has carried out collaborative projects with virology and immunology researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology.
The artist¡¯s workshop is grounded in this critical awareness and guides participants to reflect on their own shifting and evolving desires in contemporary society. Through simple meditation and a stamping technique using paint, participants create their own image variations and contribute to building a dataset of desires. This process provides an art-therapy-like experience, encouraging self-reflection on one¡¯s inner needs while simultaneously feeling both the empowerment and the exhaustion that desires bring.
The workshop is conducted in connection with the artist¡¯s talk, and participants can generate image data and immediately receive digitally transformed artworks. Ultimately, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to share perspectives on the limitations and possibilities of image data in the encounter between analog experimentation and AI technology.
